Freedom! 03:04
Every day it’s a different story People sayin' how you’re no good for me I heard you get around & they're making a fool of you, the way they do But like a prisoner who has his own key there’s no escaping its a fact you own me 'cause when I'm knocked down I’m locked down They’ll do the same to you But you always know that I'll forgive you just this once or twice forever You could drag me to hell & back just as long as we’re together (& you do) I don’t want your freedom I don’t want to play around I don’t want nobody, baby Part-time love just brings me down I don’t want your freedom I just want you

It's taken me so long to get where I belong I’m gonna shake some action & get some satisfaction You show imagination so if you’re coming along come on & sing it Come on, come on let's get it on Wake up & strap on that night vision I know you but you don’t know me I can show you the night So come on now & follow my shadow (let's go – the future is waiting) Everything is alright It's time to see it my way in the darkness o'the day I'm gonna make it easy for you to never see me it's only fascination so if you’re coming along come on & bring it

Rocket died dead on Monday By Tuesday he was in the ground Rocket died dead on Monday His guitar was all they found (it made no sound?) I’m walking away from my suicide My weary world washed away once I walked outside That morning stroll in October when the light left me sober Jesus Mary Jehovah I almost crossed over Won’t you do me a favor & send me a savior of a different flavor? & remind him to remind me how sweet the light Rocket died dead on Monday By Tuesday he was in the ground Rocket died dead on Monday His six-string was all they found Folks say he caused no trouble He enjoyed his evenings about the town but Rocket 'tended church on Sunday then one day we wasn't around (he couldn’t be found?) I wanna scale your mountains, baby then ski down your tits How sweet the light!

I Been Ready 02:51
You could always make some silence You could know our reasons since You know more than you could possibly know now Cause you don’t believe life is hard You never tried to bring me down Cause I been ready I been ready You can try to keep me out And you can know my secret now Well you have more than you could possibly know now Cause you don’t believe life is hard You never tried to bring me down But I got tired of the bus stop waiting You looked away when I found out Im not trying to be frustrating They’re not playing our song Cause I been ready I been ready You can start it all again And you could take my jagged hands Well you have more than you could possibly know now Cause you don’t believe life is hard You never tried to bring me down But I got tired of the bus stop waiting You looked away when I found out Im not trying to be frustrating They’re not playing our song I been ready I been ready Now I’m waiting

Buon giorno mia Amanda Wish you were fine now that the weather’s here You remember the aroma o'Tacoma around this time of year? But you're on la vie d'Italia shut in some ancient xenophobic state Now that LaRoma’s your new home we’ll have to conjugate from Emerald City up to the Vatican gates A prisoner's dilemma you gotta defect it's Juliet or Romeo? That naughty girl half across the world She's just her Daddy’s girl 'til you provoke her In them Tuscan hills you can’t buy a thrill where some foreigner can’t take a joke? Because a hot rockstar really gets me high Amanda Knox – I'll be your alibi O face bonita, on a night so tightly swaddled in halloween shroud The night you rolled your lira along the mirror until three was a crowd Lets hope your playmate stays quiet & no DNA's allowed? A prisoner's dilemma but you gotta defect & Raphael's no Romeo Then you can sell your story rights, do talk show nights or host your own reality show? That naughty girl half across the world She's just her Mama's pearl 'til you provoke her In them thar Tuscan hills you can’t buy a thrill So some foreigner can’t take a joke? Because a hot rockstar really gets me high Amanda Knox – lemme be your alibi You know a foxy rockstar really gets me growin' (so much that I... ?) Amanda Knox – you gotta keep on goin' - Amanda Knox Amanda Fox-in-the-Box Return the night another day Return the night some other day when we can talk in Italian: Buona notte – que cosi fe? another day Viva l'Italia Prego, mia poca volpe Ciao!

Totem Pole 03:42
She took her time in the morning but no goodbye before she rolled Hers was a house always open to me right by the totem pole Nineteen-seven-three but the street's unknown Is that some neighborhood, a zipcode or a phone? She said she’d come meet me by the totem pole but anyplace starts lookin' good when you find yourself alone We missed our time without warning Never realized it all gets old Perhaps I should have lived more like some kind o'family man It grounds you (or so I’ve been told?) Now I miss your laugh & all our forning Your fleesy hair, heart & soul Somehow I knew I should o'nailed your sweet ass down up on that totem pole You're shit out of luck You're shit's on the line You don’t give a fuck You don’t even try You’re losing faith You’re losing time You’re losing face You’re losing your mind Nineteen-seven-three but the streets unknown It was just some memory It was here but now it’s gone She said shed come meet me by the totem pole but any place starts lookin' good when you’re finally on your own

Litany 04:10
Everybody knows its a parade of sullen souls This is what we chose when we paid before we go Did you take his curse when you changed an honest one Did you smell his ghost when you claimed his only son What does it cost to defy what was never shown What cause and cost could deny his blood and bones All of that what it could’ve been But it wouldn’t be That it couldn’t win Was it destiny What it could’ve been But it wouldn’t be Everybody knows he’s afraid of dying alone And his book is closed and his friends have all gone home Now the kids are alone and the saints have all been stoned What blessed cause could deny his blood and bones What does it cost to defy what was never shown Now the kids are lost and the fires will never grow Only then what it could’ve been But it wouldn’t be All that it couldn’t win Was it destiny What it could’ve been But it wouldn’t be What worthy cause Could define the force of laws What cause and loss could deny his blood and bones Only then what it could’ve been But it wouldn’t be All that it couldn’t win Was it destiny What it could’ve been But it wouldn’t be

High atop the mountain you came down to see me Your lips flood with desire Your satin hair on fire My valentine I would wake you just to take you there Distant love o'mine I won’t make you but I can’t fake you either Your eyes that shine just like a lake view & I wanna thank you angel We both know in time I will shake you & forsake you but never break you You’re high upon the mountain while I in the valley of madness When our love burns & crashes you will still rise from the ashes Behold the Phoenix rising My valentine I would wake you just to take you there Distant love o'mine I won’t make you but I can’t fake you either Your eyes always shine divinely like a lake view & I shant forget you, angel We both know in time they’ll forsake you 'cause if I’m not mistaken She must be Jesus Christ my only friend I'm walking across her waters unto my end I know it shall be I just don’t know when (maybe some other time?) I can’t stay glad at you, O no! You must be Jesus Christ my only friend I'm walking across your waters unto my end We both know it shall be We just don’t know when Who would think in time I would ever shake you or forsake you (but I'll never break you?)

Won't Let Go 03:23
I know I’ve never been in your dreams No one ever seems to last through all the scenes Cause there’s no one that I can loathe I don’t know what it means There is nobody I can help I can help but disease Have you heard everything you wanted to I won’t let you go Cause everything I want is you and me Living out of faith as one And I won’t let you go Never want to find you gone And I won’t have to wander Ever gonna find enough Find you gone Well Ive never seen your dreams But Id like to know the cracks from all the seams And there’s nothing that I can’t know I don’t know what it means And there’s nobody I can help I can help but disease Have you heard everything you wanted to I won’t let you go Cause everything I want is you and me Living out of faith as one And I won’t let you go Never want to find you gone And I won’t have to wander Ever gonna find enough And I won’t let you go Never want to find you gone And I won’t have to wander Ever gonna find enough Gonna find you gone Find you gone

about

First new album from Urge Overkill in a decade.
When the world was asked if it was time for new music from Urge Overkill, it responded with one word—Oui.

Oui is the new release from Nash Kato and King Roeser—their first in over a decade. It’s full of their signature mix of rock, hooks, and fancy bling, which is exactly what a post-pandemic planet has needed for far too long.

Urge Overkill is comprised of two unique voices. A double singer-songwriter attack. Roeser and Kato, two Minnesota native sons, met at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. Pulling their name from Parliament’s title track “Funkentelechy,” Urge Overkill was born in 1984, releasing their debut EP Strange I… on fellow Northwestern student Steve Albini’s Ruthless Records (with Albini in the production chair, as well).

Touch And Go Records founder Cory Rusk championed the band as well, and Jesus Urge Superstar appeared on that classic Chicago label, once again helmed by Albini (while the band was housed in his basement.) Next came 1990’s Americruiser, this time produced by Butch Vig, featuring a sound and style that influenced fellow bands like Smashing Pumpkins and Nirvana, who would consequently use Vig on albums like Siamese Dream and Nevermind.

1991’s The Supersonic Storybook (named by Material Issue’s Jim Ellison) brought Albini back to the production role, and Urge opened for Nirvana on American and European legs of Nirvana’s Nevermind tour. At that point, Pearl Jam tapped them for their Vs. tour, and Urge Overkill was playing arenas.

Urge tapped Kramer (Bongwater, Butthole Surfers) to produce 1992’s Stull EP, which included a cover of Neil Diamond’s “Girl, You’ll Be A Woman Soon” and the original “Goodbye To Guyville”—whose title was adapted by Liz Phair for her acclaimed debut. Even as just an EP, it proved that Urge was ready for the big leagues, and they signed to Geffen Records later that year.

1993 brought the world Saturation, produced by the Butcher Bros. (Cypress Hill, Nine Inch Nails, Anthrax). Featuring radio hits like “Sister Havana” and “Positive Bleeding,” the band rock and rolled on. While working on Saturation’s follow-up, Quentin Tarantino picked Stull’s “Girl, You’ll Be A Woman Soon” for inclusion in his upcoming film Pulp Fiction. The film and soundtrack became a massive hit, rocketing Urge into the public consciousness. After 1995’s Exit The Dragon, Urge’s whirlwind first decade came to a close. It was time for a break.

Kato and Roeser reunited in 2010, playing a set at Tarantino’s Friar’s Club Roast, and sat on the podium alongside Samuel L. Jackson and Uma Thurman. Two years later, Rock & Roll Submarine was released to great acclaim (garnering four stars from Mojo magazine.)

Now, a decade later, Urge Overkill returns with Oui—twelve new tracks from Kato and Roeser, including eleven originals and an Urge-ified cover of Wham!’s “Freedom!” It’s the logical extension of everything everyone loves about Urge Overkill—killer riffs, memorable hooks, and the style and swagger of Nash Kato and King Roeser.

So, add the word that goes before “please.” It’s Oui.
